Message from the 8th Heart of Borneo (HoB)

The 8th HoB Trilateral Meeting in Palangkaraya, hosted by Indonesia in 3-5 December 2014 has just completed with very fruitful output and new mandate as well as commitment from the three member countries; Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. The three countries presented progress and achievement of HoB in their respected countries and successfully elected Malaysia as new chair for the HoB.  The ongoing joint programs that need to be completed in the near future include ;
(1) Video on HoB Initiative, (2) The implementation of trans-boundary protected area management and its possible link to ecotourism development, (3) The works of technical committee on Geographic Information System (GIS), and (4) Green economic approach to deliver sustainable development in the HoB.

In addition to the current programs, pending to the availability of financial support, member countries also adopted the new programs and initiative to be implemented for the next HoB 's programs.
  1. HoB corridor initiative  which possibly connected from   Crocker range -Kinabalu National Park, Pulong Tau National Park,  and Danum Valey Conservation Area (Sabah State of Malaysia), Kayan Mentarang National Park, Betung Kerihun National Park, Muller-Schwaner Protected Area and Sebangau National Park (Indonesia) and Batang Ai National Park –Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary (Sarawak State of Malaysia).
  2. Network of local communities to promote sustainable development and conservation in the HoB.
  3. Biodiversity Conservation in HoB.
  4. Borneo Bird Race-Birding in HoB.
  5. Green ecotourism and destination development in HoB
  6. HoB research and development conference: Towards Three Countries One Conservation Vision.
ADB involvement with the HoB was started in 2013 by supporting the evaluation of HoB program implementation in Brunei Darussalam. At the moment ADB has two programs related HoB; First, Sustainable Forest and Biodiversity Management in HoB of USD 4.5 Million and  Second, Forest Investment Program (FIP) of USD 70 Million which consist of USD 37.5 Million grants and USD 32.5 Million in concession credit). The FIP programs are targeted the development of Forest Management Unit (FMU) in number of district in HoB such as Kapuas Hulu and Sintang in west Kalimantan.  The first program was started in August 2014 and will be completed in 2017, while the FIP is scheduled to start in 2015 for the period of 5 years.
The Meeting ended with excursion to Sebangau National Park and Nyaru Menteng Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center.
